Emily sat at the kitchen table, the surface smooth and familiar.
Mom chopped vegetables while the old washing-machine hummed.

I made a chart, a diagram, and a graph comparing cultures.
I even prepared a questionnaire for classmates.
I want to represent our school as student representative and convey that every culture has something noble."
Uncle David's praise was immediate.
"You'll give a fantastic performance — a great performer who can perform the important work of bridging cultures, breaking down racial barriers." "I just want to express what I believe," Emily said.
"Then you shall," Granny declared.
"Will alone won't stop you."
The afternoon brought laughter.
Aunt Linda helped in the kitchen.
Granny told stories about the old church and cathedral where a choir still sang.
"Classic romance — your grandfather wrote me love letters."
Then the mood shifted.
Uncle David mentioned Great-uncle James, a relative lost after a bitter divorce.
He'd been unfit to raise a child — the birth of that estrangement cast a long shadow.
"He's sick and wants to reconnect." On behalf of everyone, Granny spoke: "Every child deserves family.
We shall not turn away."
Aiko gifted Emily a silk blouse.

Everyone laughed.
Later, Emily sat outside with Tim.
"Why is family so complicated?" he asked.

"Therefore, we should forgive Great-uncle James?"
Everyone deserves a second chance."
Inside, Mom helped Aiko fill out an adoption form.
"If you adopt, that Baby will be fully ours," Aiko said.
Aiko wasn't pregnant yet, but they hoped.
"Love doesn't depend on birth." On tomorrow's agenda: visiting Great-uncle James.
Mom felt a worry rise — the path would be steep.
But watching the blank faces of sleeping children, her heart swelled with hope.
She glanced at the watch on the wall.
Emily's former tutor, Mrs. Wang, once said: "Family is the people who stay." And stay they did — very much together.
